The transvenous extraction of cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator leads
The removal of cardiac leads is an increasingly common procedure, thanks to the higher number of PM (Pacemaker) and ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) being implanted and substituted.
After the first transvenous cardiac leads were designed and commercialized, a number of methods developed on how to remove them, and among these the most common ones are the so called manual extraction and the laser-assisted one.
Spectranetics
The Laser system for the transvenous extraction of cardiac leads is currently the only one in the world employing laser technology to safely remove cardiac leads adhering to the vessel walls or to the internal walls of the heart.
The system includes the Spectranetics CVX-300 laser generator and a number of consumable medical devices: the Glide Light and Laser Sheath fibers, LLD locking stylets, Accessory Kit and Visisheath cannula.
The Laser-assisted lead extraction procedure is characterized by overall higher efficacy and safety compared to the manual technique, and in Italy there are numerous hospitals where laser-assisted procedures happen every day, thanks to the work of Delta Hospital.
Further information on which hospitals employ this technique is available on request.
